The Indian Government has summoned the Italian envoy to Delhi after a Sikh official was asked to remove his turban during a security check at Rome Airport.
Italian Ambassador Daniele Mancini was called to the External Affairs Ministry in Delhi over the incident, which took place on Tuesday, reports say.
Manjit Singh, the Management Committee Chief of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara, claims that he and members of his delegation were asked to remove their turbans during frisking at Rome International Airport.
Mr Singh says the delegation was allowed to proceed after the Indian mission in Rome intervened.
Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal called the incident a "direct assault" on Sikh identity.
According to sources it was the third such incident at Rome airport in the past 12 months.
Italian officials have declined comment.
