Indian General targeted by extremists in London in "carefully planned attack"

Sikh extremists followed an Indian Army General through London's West End before slashing his throat in a carefully planned revenge attack, Southwark Crown Court has heard.

Lieutenant-General Kuldeep Singh Brar, 78, and his wife Meena were on a private visit to London when they were attacked near Marble Arch on the night of 30 September 2012.

Mandeep Singh Sandhu, 34, from Birmingham, Dilbag Singh, 36, from London, Harjit Kaur, 38, of West London and Barjinder Singh Sangha, 33, of Wolverhampton, are accused of targeting General Brar for his role in Operation Blue Star, the Indian government's bloody raid on the Golden Temple in Amritsar in 1984.

General Brar had to undergo several surgeries after he was cut in the face and neck.

Prosecutor Annabel Darlow said the General has been long been a target for Sikh extremist groups and described the attack as a "highly premeditated assault".

The court heard that the defendants had plotted the General's movements for two days, with Ms Kaur following him and his wife into a casino, a restaurant and even trailing the couple on a bus.

Ms Darlow said: "She played a crucial role, silently and unobtrusively following this couple who were unaware they were being followed by a woman who was relaying information to four men that were bent on attacking Brar."

Mrs Brar was reportedly grabbed by the throat and thrown against a wall while her husband attempted to fight off the men.

As the attackers fled, one of them dropped his mobile phone giving police important clues about the attackers.

The attack was the latest assassination attempt on General Brar - himself a Sikh - for his role commanding the troops who stormed the Golden Temple to flush out Sikh separatists who had amassed weapons inside the shrine.

The raid left hundreds of civilians and soldiers dead and led to the assassination of then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and the Hindu-Sikh riots of 1984.

The case at Southwark Crown Court continues.
