Londoner who escaped sex attack in Agra describes ordeal

A British tourist who was forced to jump from her hotel balcony in Agra to escape a sex attacker has been describing her ordeal after returning to the UK.

Dental hygienist Jessica Davies, 31, from Greenwich, London was forced to lock herself inside her room at the Agra Mahal Hotel from two men in the early hours of Tuesday morning (March 19).

Ms Davies had been travelling alone through India for three weeks before arriving in Agra to visit the Taj Mahal en route to Jaipur.

She told the BBC that she was "surprised" by the hotel's manager and a security guard at her door at 3.45 am asking if she would like a shower and massage.

"The manager was showing this oil he had", Ms Davies said.

Initial reports suggested she had requested for a 4.00am wake-up call to catch the early bus to Jaipur but Ms Davies denied this, saying she had set an alarm for herself.

When the two men refused to leave, Ms Davies says she barricaded herself inside the room using her furniture before screaming for help, hoping another guest or a passerby would hear her pleas.

In an interview with Indian television, two Belgian tourists staying in the hotel said they had heard shouts and banging noises coming from the room.

After an hour and 15 minutes of calling for help to no avail, Ms Davies decided to jum the 20 feet to the front yard from her balcony before running away, oblivious to fractured in both her legs, hailing a taxi and going to the police.

The taxi driver reportedly spent several hours with her at the police station, translating and providing a measure of comfort.

"He was amazing," she said, but added: "I don't know his name and I don't know how to thank him."

She also praised Agra police and British consular staff.

Ms Davies, who is now back in London, says she had "exercised a lot of caution and wearing appropriate clothes" after hearing about recent assaults on tourists in India.

Days before Ms Davies' ordeal, a Swiss tourist was gang-raped at a campsite in Madhya Pradesh.

She said she would return to India, but was "never going to travel alone again".

The manager of the hotel and security have been charged with sexual harrassment.
