The UKAsian has been given an exclusive first look at a new British-Indian film with a different take on the "New India" story.
'Samuel Street', set in the historic enclave of South Mumbai of the same name, explores the challenges faced by the fast-paced city's conservative Middle Class masses.
The film follows the fortunes of three unusually distinct characters and how their lives impact on one another; a young NRI who returns to Samuel Street after years of living abroad, a mother with strong cultural values but one who has lived independently throughout her life and a female prison officer in Britain.
'Samuel Street' is the latest project by Aliakbar Campwalla, the UK-based writer, director and actor who thrilled audiences as the jovial 'Goldie' in last year's '7 Welcome to London'.
Campwalla has a reputation for tackling unusual subjects as a director too; his directorial debut was 'The Invisible Subtitler', an exploration of the hidden world of film-subtitling.
Campwala tells the UKAsian: "'Samuel Street' is a comical, nostalgia-filled take on the issues concerning the elders who grapple with living in booming, Middle Class India. I've always wanted to make a film in Mumbai and the huge array of issues that concern this great city but create something completely different from the norm and the usual stereotypes that filmmakers propagate."
The film stars veteran Gujarati and Marathi cinema actress Sarita Joshi ('Guru', 'Bollywood Beats', 'Dasvidaniya') and London-based actors Saif Mohammed and Secil Islek.
The exclusive first trailer of the film will be released on the UKAsian 27 December.
