An Indian American man has been arrested in Florida after allegedly beating his father to death with a sledgehammer after a row over a puzzle, reports say.
Vinayak Shanbhag, 33, is facing first degree murder over the death of his 66-year-old father Pandurang who was killed in his sleep. According to reports the two men had argued over a puzzle game the night before the killing.
Shanbhag apparently told police that he was "upset" after something his father had said during a game.
According to the Daytona Beach Journal, Shanbhag was sitting on a couch with his mother when police officers arrived on the scene to assist on a medical call last weekend.
A pool of blood was discovered on the elder Pandurang Shanbhag’s bed along with a bloody pillow on the floor. A bloody sledgehammer was also found in the bedroom, according to the News-Journal.
The suspect told police he remembers “waking up and entering his father’s bedroom and striking him in the head repeatedly with a sledgehammer,” according to a police report of the incident obtained by the News-Journal.
He added that he had been violent with other family members in the past.
His mother, 60-year-old Rukma Shanbhag, told police she sleeps in a separate bedroom from her husband because she suffers from arthritis.
She said she heard her husband coughing early Saturday morning, but didn’t suspect anything was wrong because Padurang Shanbhag was battling a cold. But she eventually investigated and found blood all over the place.
She called 911 after her son admitted to the killing.
Police officials say Vinayak does not have a criminal record nor was there a history of police visits to the family home.BLOG COMMENTS POWERED BY DISQUS
