Salman to face homicide charge in hit-and-run case; faces 10 years in jail

'Dabbangg' star Salman Khan is to be tried for homicide over a fatal car accident more than a decade ago.

If convicted Khan could face up to 10 years in jail.

One was killed and another three injured when Khan allegedly drove his car into a group of homeless people sleeping on a Mumbai sidewalk in September 2002.

The actor had been charged with the lesser offence of causing death by negligence which carries a maximum jail term of two years.

Reports say that the new charge was brought after police questioned several new witnesses to the accident, which saw Khan, 47, flee the scene, leaving the victims to tend to themselves.

One Indian TV news channel reported this afternoon that one of the witnesses had told police the actor was "inebriated" and "driving recklessly".

The retrial will commence on July 19.
