#InColdBlood: 'Loving' Sikh father murdered after stepping out to get dessert for family

The family of a British Sikh father stabbed to death near his home in Southall have paid tribute, describing him as a “loving” and “hard-working” man who dedicated himself to his wife and three young children – two daughters and a son.

Harinder Rattan was found with knife wounds yards from his front door on Clarence Street, Southall, after going out to buy a pudding for his family.

The 42-year-old delivery drive died in hospital hours later.

According to friends and family, Mr Rattan was an “upstanding” member of the local community, volunteering at the Southall Gurdwara and raising money to build a hospital in the Punjab.

He had stepped out of the house on Sunday night to buy custard from a local shop but failed to return.

Police arrived at Mr Rattan’s home around midnight after his body was discovered on the street.

His sister-in-law Sharon Rattan told the Evening Standard: “We are still in shock, we can’t believe this has happened. His mother and father are in a terrible state.

“He was a lovely man. He was loving and peaceful. He didn’t believe in violence. He did voluntary work and would go to the temple every week with his family who are very religious.

“He was just going out to get them dessert. He didn’t even take his phone. If he knew someone was after him he would have taken it. It is a tragedy. His three children adored him and will now grow up without a father.”

Mr Rattan’s murder is a particularly tragic blow to his extended family after he lost his younger brother to a heart attack in 2011.

Three men who live on the same street as Mr Rattan, including two brothers, have been charged with his murder.
