#LastLaugh: Aamir Khan's 'PK' smashes Bollywood box office records despite controversy

Any publicity is good publicity, as they say.  Just ask Aamir Khan.

The actor’s latest release ‘PK’ has become the highest grossing Bollywood film of all time in India, despite causing widespread anger among the so-called ‘Saffron Brigade’ for its’ allegedly anti-Hindu message.

The film, in which Aamir plays an alien stranded on earth and who begins to question the credibility of ‘Godmen’, set the tills ringing across India raking in Rs 2.76 billion (£27.6 million) in just two weeks of release.

That box office total excludes overseas takings which are set to break further records, according to sources.

PK overtook the previous Bollywood record-holder, ‘Dhoom 3’ – which also starred Aamir Khan – which earned Rs 2.65 billion.

Third on the all-time list is Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Chennai Express’ which topped out at Rs 2.58 billion.

Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, PK’s run is all the more remarkable given numerous calls for a boycott of the movie by Hindu right-wingers leading to protests outside cinemas in several cities as well as attacks on several multiplexes.
