#Lure: Uttar Pradesh in new bid to woo Non-Resident Indians

The government of the northern Indian state Uttar Pradesh has unveiled new plans to encourage NRI’s from the region to invest in the state which was ravaged by devastating floods last year.

A new website – www.upnri.com – will offer information on investment opportunities as well as being a gateway for NRI’s from the state to “re-connect” with home, according to officials.

The portal – along with a dedicated governmental department catering to the needs of returning and visiting NRI’s – offers a range of resources from links to potential business opportunities to other services such as the issuance of a special UP NRI ID card.

A 24x7 call centre (Migrant Resource Centre) where NRIs can log complaints will also be established.

Government officials further said that the state would also celebrate "UP NRI Day" every year, beginning Jan 17 next year.

Madhukar Jaitley, advisor to the NRI department told IANS that the website was "by far the most serious and well meaning effort by the state government to bond with the NRIs".

Often considered one of India’s most lawless states – as depicted in Vishal Bhardwaj’s Shakespearean epic ‘Omkara’ – Uttar Pradesh nonetheless one of the sub-continent’s most important regions, both socially and economically.

It is India’s third largest by Gross Domestic Product – after Maharahstra and Tamil Nadu.

The state is also one of the biggest recipients of overseas remittances and has consistently outperformed other Indian states and the country in general, in terms of economic growth.

UP is also home to some of India's most renowned cultural and religious icons, including the World Heritage Site the Taj Mahal.
