#Vile: Japanese academic held hostage and gang-raped in village near Bodh Gaya

Three men from the Indian city of Patna have been arrested for allegedly gang-raping a young Japanese academic.

Police are reportedly looking for two more suspects who alleged kept the 22-year-old woman hostage for nearly three weeks in a village near Bodh Gaya, the place where Lord Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment.

A tourist guide who had taken the woman to the famous pilgrimage site reportedly kidnapped her with the help of four accomplices.

Police officials told the Associated Press that the woman managed to escape on Boxing Day and reached Kolkata where she lodged a police complaint.

She had been studying life in rural India for some months.

It’s the latest in a series of attacks on foreign women that has rocked India over the past year with Swiss, Polish and British visitors falling victim to sexual violence.

Despite stricter penalties on rapists – introduced in the wake of a horrific gang rape of a young student in Delhi in December 2012 – the number of attacks on women has steadily risen.

The number of rapes reported in Delhi rose by more than thirty percent in the year to December 2014.
